Hotels Aberdeenshire Scotland Accommodation in Aberdeenshire Hotels GuideAberdeen's rural counterpart is one of northern Scotland's most diverse counties. Beginning in the Grampian Mountains, it stretches eastwards, through Royal Deeside, before eventually forming an arching coastline around the farthest reaches of the mainland. In the west, seventeen "munros" (mountains over 3,000 feet) populate the Cairngorms, an elevated landmass and Britain's highest plateau. The tallest peak belongs to Ben Macdui (4,294 ft) on the Aberdeenshire-Highlands border. It's the second highest mountain in the country, and as you'd expect, is hugely popular with climbers. Also deep within the range is Balmoral Castle, a famous Scottish residence of the Royal Family. Its acquisition by Queen Victoria in 1852 included 50,000 acres of surrounding moors and woodland, which today are all open to the public for exploration. If you're going to be based closer to the coast, however, there're still plenty of historic sights to be seen in "Castle Country". Its trail takes visitors past some of the most impressive, from the chateau-like examples of Craigievar and Fraser, to the poignant ruins of Huntly Castle on the River Deveron. The shoreline itself is known for its vast sprawling beaches laced with miles of golden sands, and as settlements either side of Aberdeen are relatively small, many of them are often sparsely populated or completely empty.
