Ballater Hotels Ballater Scotland Hotel Accommodation

Tucked away in the scenic Dee Valley, the burgh of Ballater is one of Aberdeenshire's best-kept secrets. Quiet and relaxed, it's a perfect base for exploring the surrounding Cairngorms National Park, but life here used to be far more hectic. In the mid 19th century the town was famous for being the closest rail stop to Balmoral Castle and experienced a profitable tourist boom thanks to its star commuter, Queen Victoria. Ever since the station's closure in 1966, Ballater has reverted to its calm country existence, but its church is still attended by royals visiting Balmoral in the summer. A museum celebrating the town's Victorian heritage now occupies The Old Royal Station; its platforms are dedicated to a reconstruction of the monarch's historic arrival. Ballater Golf Club is another local institution and was founded in 1892. A challenging 18-hole course, it's known as one of the region's most attractive and is bordered by mountains on every side. If you're here to participate in the scenery rather than just admire it, however, pull on your hiking boots and head a short way northwest to find four of Scotland's five highest mountains, grouped together in the heart of the Cairngorms. Now that the trains have gone the best way to access the town is via the A93, which connects it to Aberdeen from the east, and Perth (eventually) from the south. The same road also joins Ballater to Balmoral, situated 8 miles west of town., If you need to stay in the Scottish town of Ballater this is the place to book your hotel room.
