Dunoon Hotels Dunoon Scotland Hotel Accommodation
In the 1800s Dunoon's position near the romantic Holy Loch made it a favourite Victorian holiday resort for the Glaswegian upper classes. Today it's Argyll's largest town, with a seafront still populated by the grand 19th-century villas of those who decided to settle here. Every summer the town regains its old popularity tenfold, when the Cowal Highland Gathering takes place. These games have taken place here since 1894 and are the largest of their kind in the world. Thousands travel here for the three day festival, which features a bagpipe band competition, dancing, track athletics and the traditional stone toss and hammer throw events. For the rest of the year, however, Dunoon is a quiet getaway, with walks in its nearby forest and mountains (which reach over 600 metres in height) proving the most strenuous activities available. Due to the town's remote situation on the Cowal Peninsula, the easiest way to get here (after departing the A78) is by ferry from Gourock, across the firth. Once you've arrived, sights of interest include the impressive Castle House, which was constructed partly with materials from the original Dunoon Castle. The ruins of the old structure still remain, and overlook a statue of Robert Burns's love, Highland Mary. Also sitting high in the hills is Benmore Botanic Garden, part of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. Its prize attractions include the spectacular Avenue of Giant Redwoods and assorted beds of rare Himalayan rhododendrons.
