Inveraray Hotels Inveraray Scotland Hotel Accommodation
Argyll's traditional county town is a destination with a difference. In 1745 the Duke of Argyll demolished the simple fishing village that stood here and re-housed its residents in brand new, white Georgian houses, which give the town a distinct look against its green-mountain backdrop. For his future dynasty he built the striking Inveraray Castle, which continues to house the family till this day. After a fire in 1877, parts of the castle were rebuilt and four conical towers were added to enhance its lustrous veneer still further. Inside, the Armoury Hall features a huge display of weapons that were used in conflicts with the Jacobites - a must-see. Another of the Dukes' important additions to the town included Inveraray Jail, which now holds the local museum. As you'd expect there's a wealth of gruesome artefacts that were used to punish criminals, as well as a recreated courtroom allowing you to sit in on the spectacle that was a 19th-century trial. Moored at the pier is another institution enjoying retirement as a popular visitor attraction, the 1911 discovery ship The Arctic Penguin. Here you can enjoy an interactive journey into Scotland's maritime past with an onboard cinema and reconstructions of life at sea. Five miles southwest of Inveraray is the Auchindrain Museum, Scotland's first ever open-air museum. Recreation is again the theme, and an entire village of subsistence Highland farming (a way of life which eventually died out in the 1800s) is on show.
