The capital of old Ayrshire and the largest of the Clyde Coast's holiday towns, Ayr will forever hold a place in Scottish hearts for its association with the national poet, Robert Burns. Rabbie was born in the (now encompassed) village of Alloway, and it's clearly still proud of its ties. Aficionados will want to visit Burns Cottage, his childhood home, and the neighbouring museum, which contains many of his manuscripts and early editions of his work. Both attractions can be found in the eponymous Heritage Park, which also hosts the Ayr Flower Show every summer. It's not hard to imagine how Burns was inspired by his hometown. Ayr's harbour offers a magnificent, multi-layered horizon, incorporating the Firth of Clyde, the mountainous Isle of Arran and even the misty Mull of Kintyre in the background. The town itself is dominated by the Wallace Tower, a 133 ft Neo-Gothic salute to William Wallace, another national hero. Also part of the skyline is St John's Tower, which was the setting for the first ever Parliament of Scotland in 1315 (a ceremony that doubled as Robert the Bruce's official coronation). Ayr Racecourse has held its fair share of important events as well, staging the Scottish Derby and the Scottish Grand National, to name but two.
