Kilmarnock Hotels Kilmarnock Scotland Hotel Accommodation
East Ayrshire's capital was a modest settlement until the Industrial Revolution, but a budding set of entrepreneurs soon made the most of its location between Glasgow and the port of Ayr. A stately set of Victorian streets were quickly put in place to aid the expansion, and resulted in the neatly organised settlement on show today. Kilmarnock's most popular attraction has been here far longer, however. The 14th-century Dean Castle and Country Park was given to the Boyd family by Robert the Bruce, before eventually becoming the property of the town in 1975. Today it's hugely popular with visitors, who come to enjoy the abundance of red squirrels and foxes around the daffodil-laden grounds as much as they do the castle itself. Many of the town's manufacturing and cultural connections are celebrated through street art, including The Burns Statue, which commemorates the Bard and his printer, John Wilson, who published Burns's first edition of poetry nearby. It's also claimed that Riccarton, in the south of town, was the birthplace of William Wallace and his father (a belief backed up by the family's links to nearby Craigie Castle), although neither men's exact origins have ever been confirmed. One record the town can be sure of, however, is Scotland's oldest professional football club, Kilmarnock FC, who were founded in 1869 and play at the all-seater Rugby Park.
