Hotels Borders Scotland Accommodation in Borders Hotels GuideDue to their position on the frontier, the Borders or Scottish Borders lay strewn with ruined monuments resulting from numerous clashes with the English. The most famous of these are arguably the four great Border Abbeys, constructed in the 12th century at the request of King David I. The pink-brick Melrose Abbey is one of the prettiest. Once the richest ecclesiastical establishment in Scotland, it's also the reputed burial place of the heart of Robert the Bruce. Sir Walter Scott was another national figure associated with the region. The author's self-constructed residence of Abbotsford House stands in Galashiels and contains many rare artefacts, such as a broadsword once wielded by Rob Roy. Scott's View, 9 miles west of his home overlooks the Eildon Hills and tranquil River Tweed, and was his favourite view of the Borders, epitomising a land he would romanticise many a time. Traquair House in Innerleithen (near Peebles) holds the claim to fame of being the oldest continually inhabited house in the country. Originally a hunting lodge of Alexander I in 950, it's now also home to a brewery, which produces traditional pure-malt ale. Just south from here lies some of the area's most impressive countryside - the mountainous Ettrick Forest and the trails of the Cheviot Hills. Both are perfect for hikes or strolls across their moors and are intercut by riding and cycling routes, as well some of the best fishing rivers in Scotland.
