With its sweeping hills, glut of stately homes and zebra-coloured Tudor houses, Cheshire is recognised as one of England's most picturesque counties. Once a largely rural area, it benefited greatly from the industrial revolution, which both coincided with, and instigated the construction of many a great building in the region. These include the extensive Tabley House, which boasts the first ever collection of English paintings, notably those of Turner and Sir Thomas Lawrence; Tatton Park, with its Japanese garden and rare-breeds farm; and the renovated Lyme Hall and Park, which was redesigned in the 18th century to resemble an Italianate palace. More reminders from the industrial era can be found in the county's former factories, all once cogs of this radical time. Today, such places have been transformed into fascinating visitor attractions, such as the Quarry Bank Mill in Styal (once a large cotton producer), which features the largest working waterwheel in Europe. The main industry here, however, was salt, and came about due to the many brine springs found in the Vale Royal. The Salt Museum in Northwich chronicles the production of the mineral in the area, which was then the world centre for its manufacture. Perhaps the best way to see Cheshire (and most of its neighbours) is to go to Beeston Castle.
