The other major relic to survive from the era is the amphitheatre, the largest ever constructed in Britain. Once capable of seating 7,000, its free-to-enter ruins now allow an infinite number to see the spot where military demonstrations and bloody gladiator battles took place. The old world doesn't come at the expense of the new however, and Chester has the largest concentration of pubs, clubs and restaurants in the region - giving the city a modern makeover every time the sun goes down.
