This Scotish county represents the western section of the borderlands, Scotland's ancient frontier with England. It's a romantic land, with moors, mountains, lochs and glens remaining largely unchanged from those depicted in the poems of its most championing historical resident, Robert Burns. Galloway Forest Park contains much of the idyllic scenery, with its 300 square miles of woodland forming the largest park of its kind in Britain. It's also a haven for Lowlands's wildlife, with red squirrels, deer and wild goats all calling it home. Castles are also a common sight in the county. The pink sandstone Drumlanrig is one of the most elaborate, whereas Caerlaverock and Threave are notable for their unusual positions - the former in the middle of a National Nature Reserve and the latter on a scenic island in the River Dee. Abbeys are also prevalent on the landscape. The 13th-century Sweetheart Abbey near the Solway Firth attracts much attention for its poignant ruins (as well as its charming name), but the region's associations with Christianity stretch far further back in time. The hammerhead-shaped Mull (or Rinns) of Galloway reach to Scotland's southernmost point and are spotted with the signs of some of the religion's preliminary footsteps into the country, including the 5th-century Kirkmadrine Stones. The county capital Dumfries has a pleasant mixture of blue, green and cream-coloured buildings, as well as the russet-brick Robert Burns Centre, an excellent local focus point for the arts.
