Hotels Stow on the Wold England Cheap Stow Hotels GuideAt nearly 800 ft, Stow is the highest settlement in the Cotswolds, offering spectacular views across the hills. Cut from local stone and centred around its ancient marketplace, it's a quaint, charming location that's also played an important role in British history. Many conflicts of the English Civil War took place both here in the surrounding area, with the village's St Edwards Church even used as a makeshift prison for Royalist soldiers in 1646. The town's exalted position and expansive market also made it a centre for trade, and at its height, its biennial livestock fair saw 20,000 sheep packed into the square. A farmers' market is still held once a month in Stocks Green (so-called because of its well-preserved examples of the old-fashioned punishment device) and horse fairs take place in the surrounding fields twice a week. Modern day commerce relies on the antique industry, of which there are 50 dealers, as well as numerous bookstores, galleries and art and craft shops. Other local attractions include the nearby Motoring Museum and Toy Collection and The Royalist Inn, which dates from 957 AD, and is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as England's oldest inn. Stow's prosperous past is still reflected in the town's modern day transport links, with eight separate roads converging at its heart. Should you want to stay at cheap hotels in Stow on the Wold this is the best place to book.
