Dotted with civic art and packed with galleries and theatres, Newport is the cultural capital of the old south eastern county of Monmouthshire. Wales's third largest city, it's surrounded by an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and draws visitors from all over Great Britain to the Newport Museum and Art Gallery, a variety of trendy music clubs and its ultra-modern waterfront developments (such as the Riverfront Arts Centre). Even older are the Roman ruins at Caerleon (from the Welsh meaning Fortress of the Legion). As one of the pivotal sites during the occupation, it was home to over 6,000 troops, an amphitheatre, baths and temples. It's now an excellent visitor attraction. Sport is also intertwined with the city's past. As well as its proud rugby traditions, it's home to the Celtic Manor Resort (one of the biggest championship golf course complexes in Europe), a speedway track, and the only indoor velodrome in Wales. Most easily reached by the M4 from both England and Wales, Newport additionally boasts one of only two transporter bridges still operational in Britain today.
