Hotels Southampton England Cheap Southampton Hotels GuideFor centuries Southampton has been one of England's most influential naval and engineering centres. It was from here in 1620 that the Mayflower, carrying the Pilgrim Fathers, set sail for America, and in 1912 the "unsinkable" RMS Titanic departed on its ill-fated maiden voyage. Although now a bustling modern city complete with the obligatory shopping centres, Southampton's heart, and its main attractions, are still very much of the nautical variety. The Maritime Museum houses exhibitions on both aforementioned vessels; artefacts from various luxury 20th-century liners; and an interactive children's exhibition, All Hands on Deck. It's also the starting point for the city's most popular guided walk, the Titanic Trail, a free tour of all the sites associated with the iconic superliner. Although its marine connections are eminent, Southampton is equally famous, if not more so, for its aircraft. The 20th century saw the first transatlantic passenger flying boats, the Folland Gnat, and the legendary Spitfire all depart from the Solvent area, and these, along with several others, are duly commemorated in the city's Hall of Aviation. Just around the corner, housed in the sturdy 15th-century God's Tower, is the Museum of Archaeology, which displays numerous Roman, Saxon and medieval pieces. Elsewhere, the Civic Centre's City Art Gallery is home to major collections of British and European art from the 14th to the 20th centuries. Despite suffering heavy bombing in World War II, a half-a-mile circuit of medieval walls, now pedestrianised, still encircle the old town and make for poignant viewing.
