Hotels Isle of Skye Scotland Accommodation in Isle of Skye HotelsSkye is both the largest and the most accessible of the Inner Hebrides, conveniently joined to the mainland via Sky Bridge. Over the years, it's been immortalised in both book and song, but truth be told, the scenery here really doesn't need romanticising further. The basalt mountain range of the Cuillins is the island's most prominent feature, its dozen munros making for some of the most spectacular and climbable peaks in Britain. Further north stands the Old Man of Storr, one of the many towering rocks that keeps guard over the valleys here. Close by, more stunning natural stones populate the volcanic plateau of Quiraing, where a series of landslides have resulted in some truly extraordinary surroundings. It was, of course, into all of this that Bonnie Prince Charlie fled after losing the Battle of Culloden in 1746. His escape, disguised as a maidservant has become national folklore, and the grave of the woman he impersonated, Flora MacDonald, can be found near Skye's northernmost tip. Among the island's 9,000 residents are, and have for centuries, been the chiefs of the Clan MacLeod, whose seat of power rests in Dunvegan Castle. Reputedly the oldest continually inhabited castle in Europe, it's home to a number of family relics, including the Fairy Flag, believed to have been presented to the clan by spirits to aid protection. Another favourite tourist destination is the Isle's only distillery, Talisker. Founded in 1830 it's the producer of one of the best Highland malts, which is often described as "the lava of the Cuillins".
