Thurso HotelsThe Highland outpost of Thurso is the northernmost town on mainland Scotland, and easily the largest settlement on the north coast. It's historically known as a ferry port to the Orkney Islands, but there's plenty to enjoy in the town itself, not to mention along its breathtaking coastline. Like many places on Orkney, Thurso's origins are Scandinavian, and its name has been identified as possibly meaning "Thor's River". What is for sure, however, is that during Viking times it acted as an important gateway to the Kingdom of Scotland. The Heritage Museum houses an excellent collection of local artefacts from the Norse era and before. Pictish stones; a runic cross; Bronze Age tools; and the original font from Old St Peter's Church (the ruins of which overlook the harbour), are among the most interesting items. More recently, the town and its surrounding area have become known for their excellent surfing conditions, staging the European Surfing Championships numerous times. The three-mile-long beach at Dunnet Bay, and the rollers of Brims Ness match anything Hawaii has to offer... although the water here is a little cooler! Thurso can be reached on the long, winding A9 road, which originates north of Stirling, over 250 miles away.
