Hotels Wick Scotland Accommodation in Wick HotelsThe history of Wick has two major chapters. The first began on the North Head of Wick Bay, where an Old Norse village gradually evolved into a thriving 19th-century fishing port. As said industry grew, the second chapter was written on the bay's south side, with the construction of Pulteneytown in the 1800s. The new harbour soon became Europe's busiest herring port, and pioneering Victorians flocked here to take full advantage. The two burghs were united in 1902, and have since been considered as one. The town's glory days are documented in full at the local museum - the Wick Heritage Centre. Amongst the prized possessions are a selection of seafaring clothing and wares, an exhibition of local artists' paintings, and a collection of photographs dating from 1863. Looking at the throng of some 1,000 boats combing the harbour, it's easy to see how to town initially became so prosperous, before practically fishing the waters bare by the early 1900s. The Pulteney Distillery was founded in 1826, soon after the town itself, and many of the dockworkers were also employed here. The distillery is the northernmost on the Scottish mainland, and still produces the Old Pulteney Single Malt Whisky. Guided tours are extremely popular. Wick's immediate coastline is as rough and ragged as it is beautiful. Set against its tumbling waves are the ruins of various castles, from the Norse Castle of Old Wick, to the remains of the 15th-century home of William Sinclair, the 1st Earl of Caithness.
