Ever since Glasgow became Scotland's commercial capital, the green valleys of Lanarkshire have served as its most immediate rural getaway. Clyde Valley, in particular, is home to many of both South and North Lanarkshire's star attractions - taking in the beautiful surroundings of the Lowther Hills, before flowing past Glasgow's various riverside memorials to the Industrial Revolution. One of the main draws here is the World Heritage Site of New Lanark, a purpose built community for cotton production, which has since been transformed into a museum complex. Still an occupied village, its 18th-century mills were powered by the water from the adjacent Falls of Clyde - a real spectacle in their own right. The original Lanark was written into national lore, when local hero William Wallace reportedly first drew his sword here to defeat the town's English sheriff in 1297. It's one of a number of important historical events to have taken place in the region, along with the battles of Drumclog and Bothwell Bridge. The remnants of Bothwell Castle, known as the finest 13th century castle in Scotland, were the scene of many additional battles that led to its occupation by both Scottish and English forces. The neighbouring town of Blantyre was the birthplace of the famous explorer David Livingstone, and today is home to an award-winning museum in his name. Not totally unlike that at New Lanark, it comprises of a series of mill buildings (converted from those Livingstone worked in as a child) and is dedicated to his missions to Africa.
