Hotels Scottish Islands Cheap Hotels in the Scottish Islands Guide

Windswept, isolated and virtually treeless, the islands around Scotland's northern coastline initially appear to be much alike, but nothing could be further from the truth. Divided into three main groups: Shetland, Orkney and the Hebrides, they number almost 800, although only a minority of these are inhabited (or inhabitable). Historically, the archipelagos of Shetland and Orkney in the north, share cultural ties with Scandinavia (having been part of the kingdom of Norway until 1469), whereas the Hebrides (or Western Isles) inherited Celtic Christian traditions from Ireland. All three bear landmarks from before these times, however, in the form of Neolithic sites dating back well over 5,000 years. Some of the best include the Maes Howe tomb and the ancient village of Skara Brae on Orkney; Mousa Broch, Shetland's Iron Age round tower; and the looming Standing Stones of the Outer Hebrides. Another of the districts' institutions is its profusion of exotic wildlife. Again, this changes from island to island, but each range has its specialty, from the grey seals basking on the beaches in Orkney, to Shetland's synonymous ponies. Seabirds can be found around most headlands, with puffins, razorbills, skuas and numerous other varieties populating any ledge man cannot. Despite this often forbidding landscape, travel to the islands is made possible by and air links from Glasgow, and more commonly, by ferries from the mainland periphery. Orkney is just 6 miles from John o'Groats, but you'll have to prepare for a slightly longer trip to the Shetlands. Just like the destinations, however, a journey in these parts is an adventure in itself. If you need to stay in the Scottish islands this is the place to book your hotel room. All of our rooms at good prices and so convenient for you. Choose the one you want from the list below, click on the picture or the text link for more information and to check availability. Some of our hotels may be near to the islands but not on them.
