In the fourteenth and fifteenth century many packhorse trains trudged their way from the quarries in Castleton to the foundries of Sheffield, on their way they passed the place where The George now stands and it is believed that it was originally built to take advantage of this passing trade.In the following years it was owned by a number of people but its exact history is unsure until 1876, when it was purchased by Tennants Brewery for £700. It stayed with them, and their parent company Whitbreads, until it was purchased by its present owner in 1996. The new owner is a hotelier with over thirty years experience and they have lovingly renovated and refurbished it, with great care taken to retain much of the original charm and character, with original stone walls, oak beams and open fireplaces they have created what is now a superb and award winning hotel.
