Some of Scotland's most enduring landmarks can be found in the small county of Fife. The ruins of what was once the country's largest cathedral, St Andrew's, still loom over the famous town it helped construct, after its stones were pilfered from the site in the 16th century. A similar fate befell St Andrew's Castle on the seafront, but again, its striking remains are also well worth investigating. The undeniable reason many choose to visit the town (besides the university), however, is its status as the "home of golf" - a title earned thanks to the world's oldest course and some of the finest links in existence. Scotland's former capital Dunfermline is another of Fife's towns dominated by a scarred monument - the 12th-century Abbey Church. Despite the damage, the church's impressive Norman nave remains intact, as do the tombs of 22 Scottish kings and queens, including that of Robert the Bruce. Falkland Palace, 5 miles north of county capital Glenrothes, is one structure in the region that's succeeded in retaining its old grandeur. It was transformed from a castle by Kings James IV and V into one of the finest Renaissance buildings in the land, and also contains Britain's oldest tennis court (built in 1539) within its grounds. Further north, the coastal pine forest of Tentsmuir is popular with red squirrels, deer and grey seals (not to mention a few ramblers!)
