Located in the far southeast of England this port town has much to offer you as a traveller. With Dover being only 10km to the northeast it is a perfect stop over for your journey by ferry. What's great about this town is that it provides you with pretty much everything you could wish for, and if there's something you can't get here, you can hop on a train and find it half an hour later in Europe. Perching on England's southeast coast, it's in a prime location for beaches, warm weather and great views. Its closeness to the Continent is a bonus but there's plenty to keep you on home soil as well, not to mention home sands and cliffs. While you're up on those white giants you have to check out the renowned Leas Promenade, with its mile of manicured lawns and stunning views. The town's also great for both sandy and shingled beaches, as well as excellent seaside amusements such as Rotunda Park, where you'll find rollercoasters and ghost trains. Venture just around the corner to find the cute harbour with its rows of fishing boats that sell their catches on the quayside. The harbour was also a setting off point for troops in World War I, whereas the nearby Hawkinge Airfield was a frontline fighter station during the Second World War. Just as the town has played a big part in history, history now makes up a large part of the town. There are some fascinating museums on offer, such as the Folkestone Museum and Art Gallery and the Kent Battle of Britain Museum. The latter (housed at Hawkinge) boasts a selection of artefacts from the conflict, including a Messerschmitt plane that crashed there during a raid.
