Wetlands, open fields and a spectacular coastline define this, the southern half of East Anglia. Sharing part of The Broads with its (slightly) larger counterpart of Norfolk, it's a land peppered with white-sail windmills, pink-washed cottages, and criss-crossed by ancient waterways. Areas of historical interest can be found in all corners of the county. They range from the rural - the Anglo-Saxon burial site of Sutton Hoo (regarded as the most important and atmospheric of its kind in England), to the crafted city of Bury St Edmunds with its famous abbey and 20th-century cathedral. Both towns and countryside are the attractions along Suffolk's 40-mile stretch of Heritage Coast, however. An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, its cliffs and heather heaths have been eaten away at by erosion from the North Sea, leading to some distinctly shaped shoreline. One of the most notable victims to this regression is the 'lost city' of Dunwich (population 1,000). This seat of power for the Anglican Kings of the 7th century once housed 12 churches; since the last collapsed in 1919, however, they now all belong to the sea. The majority of the splendid surroundings and nature reserves have not suffered the same fate of course; as so with another delightful coastal town - Aldeburgh. Its Tudor Moot Hall, with an intricately carved half-timbered facade, is a main attraction, as is the annual classical music festival, held here in June and founded by ex-resident Benjamin Britten.
