This ancient town once lay tucked away in the trees of Sherwood Forest, before developing into a thriving market town, which today is a centre for entertainment, leisure and the arts. The town's structure still revolves around its massive market its centre, which features over 230 stalls selling something for everyone. These include traditional wares, such as homemade foods and household apparel - some of which wouldn't have looked out of place back in 1227, when the Markets Charter was granted on the town by Henry III. This isn't the only retail experience here however, with The Four Seasons Shopping Centre offering over 50 high-street names. As you move out from the hub of the town you'll find the top local entertainment draws, such as the Palace Theatre, which has recently undergone a completely modern re-development making it one of the trendiest places to be seen in the area. There's also a wealth of nightlife in both nearby the Clumber and Leeming Streets provided by the town's many lively clubs and bars. If you're looking for something to do with the family then the 8 screen multiplex cinema or the huge 28 lane American-style bowling alley can start you off, perhaps followed with a trip to MakingIt - a fun, interactive, technology and design experience where kids and adults can have all kinds of fun construction their very own inventions. Being so close to Sherwood Forest, there's also a load of history packed into this town, notably the grand old Major Oak Tree, which is regarded as the actual centre tree of the original forest. The surrounding woodland made it difficult to get to this town back in Robin Hood's day, now it's thankfully made easier via direct road links off the A1 and M1 and Mansfield Train Station located only a few minutes walk from the market square.
