Located in the Scottish heartlands, the county of Stirling has long served as a central stage for some of the most pivotal moments in the nation's history. Battles at Bannockburn, Stirling Bridge, and numerous sieges of Stirling Castle in the 13th and 14th centuries helped shape the Wars of Independence, carving the names of such men as William Wallace and Robert the Bruce permanently into both folklore and the history books. Later, the wooded slopes and sparkling lochs (including the country's largest, Loch Lomond) amongst The Trossachs became the home and hideout of Scotland's most prominent folk hero - Rob Roy. His mountainous residence gained further acclaim when it was immortalised by Walter Scott in several of his novels and poems, including the best-selling 1810 tale Lady of the Lake. A visitor centre for both The Trossachs and Rob Roy can be found in the village of Callander, the range's eastern gateway, while the grave of the man himself can be seen at Balquhidder. Although county capital Stirling is Scotland's newest city, it's nevertheless been another key player in British history. As well as the inescapable image of its looming 15th-century castle, it's also the keeper of the Wallace Monument, a 220 ft sandstone statue that overlooks the site of one of the leader's greatest victories.
