Hotels Colchester England Cheap Colchester Hotels Guide

Britain's oldest recorded town is a thriving mix of ages, from ancient architecture to contemporary convenience. Although estimated to have at least 3,000 years of history, Roman invaders were the first to register Colchester's (then Camulodunum's) existence in AD 43... before later making it their British capital. The era's impact is still here for all to see - from the remaining 10 ft thick town walls to the largest Roman town gate in the country. Incidentally, the tallest gatehouse in Britain is here as well - the 80 ft Layer Marney Tower, which was erected in Tudor times. The records keep coming in the form of Colchester Castle, which boasts the oldest and largest Norman keep in England - twice the size of the Tower of London's White Tower. Somewehre with as much history as this naturally needs a few museums, and Colchester doesn't disappoint. There're the Natural History and East Anglican Railway museums to start with, then the Hollytrees Museum, which chronicles the day-to-day lives of residents from the last 300 years; and finally, Tymperleys, a fascinating exploration of the once booming local clock-making industry. Elsewhere, the Beth Chatto Gardens are always in full bloom (remarkable given the fact they were purposefully grown in harsh habitats as a horticultural experiment), and Colchester Zoo continues to be a guaranteed winner with all members of the family. Our location in the ancient and beautiful city of Colchester is ideal for business and leisure travellers. Just a short journey by rail from the centre of London and with an excellent road system, travel around the region is quick and easy. This town has much Roman history with walls and other remains all about it. As the oldest recorded settlement in England it is not surprizing to find history all around you. Brigantine tribes settled here and then the Trinovantes with the help of Julius fortified the area.
